CAVA's role
About CAVA
The Cambridge Access Validating Agency (CAVA) is responsible for ensuring the quality and standards of the Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma, a qualification designed to prepare students for university-level study. CAVA operates under the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) framework, authorizing and overseeing Access to HE courses provided by colleges and training providers. CAVA’s role includes validating Diplomas, supporting providers in delivering high-quality education, and overseeing processes to ensure fair, reliable, and consistent grading across all Access to HE courses.
When to contact CAVA
Students typically interact with their course providers directly for support with their studies, assessments, and general course information. However, students may contact CAVA for:
Clarification on Diploma requirements or course recognition.
Information on complaints and appeals processes related to assessments or moderation decisions.
CAVA is committed to addressing any queries promptly and guiding students through any procedures that may be applicable.
External Moderation process
External moderation ensures that academic standards on Access to HE Diplomas are maintained across different providers. CAVA appoints external moderators who work with providers to review samples of student work, assessment practices, and grading decisions. This process includes:
Sample reviews: External moderators assess samples of student work to confirm that grading standards are applied consistently.
Standardisation events: Regular standardisation sessions allow moderators and providers to align grading practices, fostering consistency across all Access to HE courses.
Reporting and feedback: Moderators submit reports on their findings, and providers may be required to take corrective actions if any discrepancies in grading or quality are identified.
Through these practices, CAVA ensures that all students are assessed fairly and that their grades reflect a consistent standard of achievement across different Access to HE courses.
